Equipped with your trekking gears and drinking water, you will ascend in the forest to trek the endangered gorillas in Rwanda. Upon seeing them, you are allowed to be with the mountain gorillas as you photograph them and look at them at close range in amazement. Day 3: Take a Dian Fossey Grave site hike.

After breakfast, drive to park offices of the Volcanoes National Park headquarters and then start a hike to the Dian Fossey grave site at Karisoke Research Centre. Karisoke scientific base was established by Dian Fossey in the saddle area between two volcanoes; Mt Visoke and Mt Karisimbi (from which the name Karisoke was derived). The camp site stands at a height of about 3000 m (over 9000 feet) about sea level. This camp was abandoned during the unrest of the 1990’s. All that remains today is the graveyard where several of Dian Fossey’s favourite gorillas were also buried. Dian Fossey was also laid near the graves of her treasured gorillas.

The walk to the Karisoke research camp lasts around 4 hours and leads you via some of the most stunning sections of Hagenia – Hypericum forest in the Volcanoes National Park. The hike starts at 07:00 am from the Park offices in Kinigi, from where you will be driven to the start point for the trek. After hiking, return to the lodge for lunch and overnight.
